Certification

July 2-3, 2020 

We’re pleased to be able to offer the opportunity for certification classes right here in Area 12!   Handbell Techniques, Theory, and Conducting are all being offered at our pre-conference event on July 2 & 3, 2020. 

We’ve structured the schedule so that you could complete Level 1 Certification in all disciplines (and Level 2 in Techniques) and still have time to enjoy the rest of the conference activities on Friday – Sunday!

About Handbell Certification

The Handbell Musicians of America Certification has been developed as a comprehensive curriculum program designed to address all levels of training and experience with handbell and handchime instruments.

Level 1 Certification consists of four courses:  Handbell History, Handbell Techniques 1, Music Theory 1, and Conducting 1.  

  • Handbell History can be completed on-line.  
  • Techniques 1 and Music Theory 1 are both offered through the Handbell Musicians of America “Virtual Bell Academy”.  

At the Area 12 Certification event in Las Vegas we are offering:

  • Conducting 1 as on-site course, including testing
  • Music Theory 1 as on-site course, including testing
  • Music Theory 1 also as a Test Only option
  • Techniques 1 as Test Only
  • Techniques 2 as on-site course, including testing

Techniques

Certification: Handbell Techniques Level 1 – Testing ONLY on Friday July 3, 2020

Certification: Handbell Techniques Level 2 – on Friday, July 3, 2020

Instructor: Michèle Sharik

Handbell Techniques is one of the courses required for Certification.

Techniques 2 is the next step and examines basic multiple-instrument handbell and handchime ringing (commonly known as “weaving”) and damping techniques, as well as handbell and handchime articulation techniques. Special attention will be given to identifying current and historical notational conventions for the various handbell and handchime articulation techniques, as well as to principles of ergonomics and sound production. Level 1 coursework can be completed ONLINE at the Virtual Bell Academy. 

You do not have to be enrolled in the Certification program to take the class, but you DO have to be enrolled BEFORE taking the class if you want it to count towards Certification.

If you are taking the class for Certification and wish to do Test Only on-site, you will arrange for a 15-minute evaluation time with the instructor, to be held during the designated time on Friday Morning.   

Level 2 coursework will be completed in 3 class sessions on Friday.  There is a PREREQUISITE of having taken Techniques 1 to take Techniques 2.  Those taking the Techniques 1 Test Only and registering for Techniques 2 will be informed by Instructor Michele Sharik if you have passed Level 1 before testing for Level 2. 

You do not have to be enrolled in the Certification program to take the class, but you DO have to be enrolled BEFORE taking the class if you want it to count towards Certification.

If you are taking the class for Certification, you will arrange for a 20-minute evaluation time with the instructor to be held during the fourth session of this track course.

Music Theory

Certification: Music Theory Level 1 – on Thursday, July 2, 2020

Certification: Music Theory Level 1 – Testing ONLY (evening of Friday, July 3, 2020)

Music theory is one of the courses required for certification. Please go to the website to familiarize yourself with all of the topics covered, as well as read over the course outline and syllabus at:

There will be a written test, ear-training test, and an individual rhythm test.

You do not have to be enrolled in the Certification program to take the class, but you DO have to be enrolled BEFORE taking the class if you want it to count towards Certification.

If you are interested in testing out of Theory Level 1, you can sign up for Testing only, and take the test.

Conducting

Certification: Conducting Level 1 – on Thursday, July 2, 2020 and Testing on the morning of Friday, July 3, 2020

Instructor: Tessique Houston 

Conducting is one of the courses required for certification. Conducting 1 reviews the basics, (please note that this is not an introduction to conducting class) – posture, stance, use of a baton and non-conducting hand gestures, all in common meters. Additional topics include critical listening, score study, and memorization. Details about this specific class may be found at: http://certification.handbellmusicians.org/conducting/.

Please note that there are two required scores to bring, as well as a baton. There is also a video submission requirement – deadline is June 1, 2020.  Please check the above link for details on both.

The instruction for this class is offered during the first 3 sessions of this four session track.

You do not have to be enrolled in the Certification program to take the class, but you DO have to be enrolled BEFORE taking the class if you want it to count towards Certification.

If you are taking the class for Certification, you will arrange for a 10-minute evaluation time with the instructor to be held during the fourth session 4.2 of this course.
